Pre-strike 1 lb Our message is simple: Most mosquitoes only fly a few hundred feet from where they hatch; stopping them from hatching in your yard will prevent them from being in your yard.

PreStrike will help consumers "Attack Mosquitoes Before They Have a Chance to Attack You." Federal health officials stated that the West Nile virus had spread more quickly since resurfacing in the United States this summer, prompting fears of another record outbreak of the deadly mosquito-borne disease. CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding stated in an Atlanta press conference, "It's too soon to predict the shape of the epidemic, but the signs all indicate that there is reason to anticipate a problem."

Tips for Battling Mosquitoes in Your Backyard

The mosquito-borne West Nile virus continues to be a growing health concern in the United States. In 2002, the virus spread rapidly across the country, being found in people in 40 states and the District of Columbia. The seasonal battle against blood sucking mosquitoes has become a concern of individuals, as well as local health departments and entomologists.

"Individuals should be protecting themselves against mosquito bites not just with insect repellent, but also by taking measures to ensure that the area around their home does not become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, " said Dr. Jordan Siegel, technical services veterinarian for Wellmark International. "You can't prevent mosquitoes from coming into your yard. But because the Culex species of mosquito, a common carrier of West Nile virus in the United States, has a limited flight range, homeowners can help reduce the population of mosquitoes around their property by eliminating or treating any stagnant water. Stagnant water can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes to lay their eggs."

In response to increasing public concern, Wellmark International has developed a consumer-applied mosquito larvicide product that kills developing mosquitoes before they emerge as breeding, biting adults by using proven insect growth regulator technology. Available in granular form, the product can be easily applied in areas where mosquitoes may breed to provide protection for up to 21 days.

Dr. Siegel advises that homeowners treat areas such as bird baths, water gardens, ornamental fountains, animal watering troughs, and flowerpots, as well as tree holes, old tires, pool covers, urns, rain barrels, roof gutters, abandoned swimming pools, and any other water holding receptacle.

In summary, Dr. Siegel offers the following tips to help prevent or avoid mosquito bites in your backyard:

Since mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, either eliminate or treat any stagnant bodies of water in receptacles or containers in your yard.
Remove litter from your yard. Mosquitoes can lay eggs in small, discarded items that can hold water such as cans, bottles, and wrappers.
Stay indoors during dawn, dusk, and early evening when mosquitoes are more likely to bite.
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants for extra protection.
For people, use a repellent on skin and clothing containing DEET. Apply repellent sparingly to exposed skin.
Protect your dog, cat, or horse with a product that is made especially for animals that repels mosquitoes.
