All ants live in colonies, consisting of an egg-laying female (queen), short-lived males, and workers (sterile females). The ants you see foraging in your garden or kitchen are workers. Workers that find food communicate with other workers by depositing a chemical message on the substrate as they crawl back to the nest. Although we cannot smell it, this "trail pheromone" sticks to the substrate for long periods of time and helps other ants find the food at the end of the trail.
Ants are social insects which live together in cooperative, intermingling colonies. The colonies may range in size from hundreds to millions of individuals, depending on the species. Within each colony are different types of individuals, each with a specific function. All ant colonies contain one or more queens, whose primary role is to lay eggs. The eggs hatch into white, grub-like larvae that later transform into adult "worker" ants. The workers feed and care for the queens and developing brood, and are the ones seen foraging for food and water, often at great distances from the colony. Ants lay down invisible odor trails, which the workers follow between food and the nest. In many species, the trail of ants is distinct enough to be followed back to the nesting location, or to where the ants are entering from outdoors.
Put the most ant-attractive food items (honey, sugar, sweet liqueurs, cough syrup, etc.) into the fridge or into jars with rubber gaskets and lids that close with a metal clamp. Unless the lid of a screw-top jar has a rubber seal, ants can follow the threads right into the jar – although a couple of layers of waxed paper (not plastic wrap) between the jar and the lid often work pretty well as a barrier, once the lid is screwed down tightly. Transfer other foods, such as cookies in open boxes, to containers with tight-fitting lids; put butter in the fridge. NOTE: paper and cardboard boxes are not ant-proof.
It's best not to use over the counter repellent sprays to battle an ant infestation. As they may provide temporary relief, you may actually be making the problem worse, by forcing them away from the areas treated. In time, they begin to show up in additional areas, and at greater frequency.
